The story of Signefia

During my summer vacation in Tornionlaakso at my grandmother's house, I was searching for something and stumbled upon boxes filled with handicrafts my mother had collected from the old side. Inside were woven rugs and linens, as well as intricately crocheted laces. Some of these pieces were very old, reflecting the creativity, diligence, and unique handwork of women from different generations in our family.

I’ve always been into crocheting and knitting myself, making all kinds of gifts for my family, friends, and their children for as long as I can remember. Seeing those handicrafts gave me a strong urge to create something. However, during the summer, I wasn’t particularly interested in knitting or crocheting larger projects. That’s when I started thinking about something I’d seen on social media—something manageable as a mother of small children. Earrings!

I’m definitely an earring person, and so are many of my friends. So that’s what I started with. I began crocheting earrings as gifts for myself and others. I became passionate about it and fell in love with jewelry-making in general, which led me to expand my product range. I wanted to capture the beauty of summer nature, so I started collecting and drying plants. Gradually, this gave rise to the "Pohjoisen kasvit" collection (Northern plants), where dried plants are preserved under glass, bringing the beauty of summer and autumn into the depths of winter.

I told my brother Markus about my creations, and he got excited, encouraging me with his strong support and professional expertise to open an online store to share my jewelry with others. I hope you find as much joy in them as I have in making them.

With the nature of Muonio and the fell regions of Lapland as my home, and the inspiration provided by the eight seasons, I’m constantly coming up with new ideas for jewelry. The pieces I’m currently working on reflect the contrast of autumn’s darkness and winter’s snowy brightness, while the Christmas season and its unique colors are inspiring thoughts of new designs. Every season brings something new and deeply connected to that moment to this store.

Sustainability and responsibility are important to me, so I source materials as locally as possible and often use recycled materials. Some of the threads are vintage crochet threads inherited from my grandmother and great-grandmother. All jewelry components are hypoallergenic surgical steel sourced from Finnish suppliers. Every piece is handcrafted by me, made to last both time and use.

My heart has always beat for the beauty of nature and the joy of creating with my hands. In my "free time," I’m equally at home with my hands in the soil or holding a crochet hook or knitting needles. After years of dreaming, I decided to take a leap into the unknown, combining these passions into one entity—and here it is: Signefia.

The name comes from my great-grandmother, and just like the names of the crocheted jewelry designs, borrowed from the craftswomen in my family, it reflects my deep respect for history, handicrafts, family, and heritage.

I hope you find some lovely products in our collections!

I’m typing on my computer and occasionally on my phone. My cooking specialties? Italian seafood risotto (made it once and nailed it right away) or the trendy baked feta pasta.

I’m originally from Lapland, though I’ve become a bit more city-oriented over time. Thankfully, it’s true what they say: you can take a person out of Lapland, but you can’t take Lapland out of the person—especially if you’re wearing Signefia.

In my opinion, these are genuinely the coolest pieces of jewelry out there.
